The National Examinations in World Languages (NEWL) are online proficiency exams designed for high school students studying Arabic, Korean, Portuguese, or Russian—languages critical to today's global economy.
Administered by American Councils for International Education and endorsed by the College Board, NEWL can help high school students distinguish themselves from their peers in the competitive college admission process.
Modeled after the College Board’s AP® exams, NEWL provides an AP-style score report, helping students earn college credit and placement in advanced courses. A strong NEWL score can meet foreign language requirements for college admissions and even contribute to earning the Seal of Biliteracy—showcasing your multilingual skills to colleges!
Exams are offered every April, with registration opening in March. Prepare by taking a practice test, and be ready to demonstrate your proficiency in reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
Taking NEWL means more than just a test—it’s a step toward academic achievement, cultural connection, and career readiness.
Are you ready to showcase your language skills?
